Name: Ann-Shirley
Date: 08./01/2014
Time started: 0900H
Time end: 1300H
Examiner: Capt Hj Abdul Samad
Questions:
1. Last ship's particulars
2. Calculations
Given posn A and posn B, calculate dist using Great circle sailing and Mercator sailing. Vessel depart posn A on 09/01/2014, speed 15 kts, calculate ETA posn B.
Calculate sun rise and sun set time of a posn, 08/01/2014
Using sun rise time, calculate azimuth & amplitude
3. last ship's LSA
He wants the exact quantity for different type of lifebuoys, giving 14 buoys onboard as answer is not good enough.
All other LSA with the quantity. Take note that BA sets are not LSA equipment, it's FFA equipment
4. Lights and shapes.
He gave me the magnetic board and ask to give answer to vessel engaged in towing seen from astern, should be red white red followed by towing light and stern light. Shape exhibit by vessel engaged in trawling.
5. Quote rule 7 & 18. Not necessary word by word, as long as keywords are there
6. Radar plotting, own course 270 degree, target 000 degree.
7. Aphelion and perihelion
8. Why Kuantan flooded recently? It has to do with NE monsoon and he asked which months was it, I answered Dec-Apr according to Subramaniam's book but it's wrong. Correct answer is Nov-Mar. Also the flooding has to do with moon in conjunction with the sun and causes high mean water spring.
9. Preferred Channel buoy, South cardinal mark.
10. Rule 3, not all, he just ask a few and moved on. Same, no need to quote exactly like what is written in books, important keywords should be sufficient.
11. Pyrotechnics expiry
He will try to confuse you or make you think your answer is wrong. Just stand firm on your answer if you believe it is right.
12. What info can you derived from AIS?
Answer can be many, but the ones he really wants is CPA & TCPA.
13. Use of VHF.
When in situation whereby you can't take any action to avoid collision due to congested waters and narrow channel, use vhf to communicate with other vessel.
