This is a sextant and it was the secondary equipment to find the ship position incase if the electronic navigation equipment such as GPS are breakdown.

Most of younger generation especially gen X and Y don't like to know and use this equipment to compare the ship position. Actually to use it is easy like A,B and C only because all you need to know is the function,limitation,correction to apply,what table to use and what formulae to use + how to plot the PL ??? They only remember for short term memory..just install the info just to PASS the paper and without think i can use it and show to my cadet!!! Proud to be knowledgeable navigator...and know how to apply it...
